The Library of Celsus is the signature architectural monument at Ephesus dedicated to Tiberius Julius Kelsus Polemaeanus. Celsus led a remarkable life, a native Greek Ephesian he rose to prominence by making the fortuitous decision to back Roman General Vespasian during the Year of the Four Emperors. Vespasian came out on top during this tumultuous period and after ascending the throne to become the Roman Emperor elevated Celsus to the Roman Senate. Later in his life Celsus became governor of Asia with Ephesus as its provincial capital. In this video we will explore the circumstance that led to the construction of this iconic building.
