Under pressure from President Trump, the House passed a controversial elections reform bill known as the SAVE America Act, introducing national voter ID requirements and proof of citizenship and eliminating mail-only registration. It would represent a major shift in the amount of influence the federal government has in elections, which are typically managed by states. While the bill is unlikely to beat a Democratic filibuster in the Senate, it’s still drawn national attention for just how draconian it is. The liberal nonprofit Brennan Center for Justice says more than 21 million potential voters do not have “ready access” to the documents that would allow them to vote, possibly installing a significant hurdle to voter access. While voting is already illegal for noncitizens (and exceedingly rare), Republicans have latched onto voter ID requirements that they claim will improve voters' faith in elections. Opponents counter that the people likely to be affected disproportionately vote for Democrats and that the increased scrutiny could put election workers at risk. The Campaign Legal Center’s policy counsel Nicole Hansen joins Michael Smerconish to explain the SAVE America Act and why it’s crucial to American democracy that it be stopped before it becomes law.
