Hornady ECX bullets tested for Accuracy, penetration, expansion and down range performance Not all lead free or copper bullets behave the same in flight and especially so when they reach the target, penetration and expansion are a key feature to terminal ballistics and lead free bullets can suffer with the latter. We all know going down a weight size in your preferred calibre is beneficial when switching to lead free, ie if you shoot a 150 grain .30 cal bullet dropping down to 125gr or lower helps to achieve a similar or belter expansion from the harder copper projectiles. I have used most of the available factory lead free rounds now in most calibres and still have the same conclusions to those above and one round really stands out for me with regards suitability for British Deer species. That’s the Hornady ECX factory loads distributed by Edgar Brothers and they form part of Hornady’s International range. These are specifically designed for use on our type of game and not larger USA deer species. As such they are more about accuracy and expansion at the normal deer ranges we encounter in European and not the longer “across the canyon” shots common in the USA. Today I am looking at my favourite ECX bullet and that the 125 grain ECX .308 Win factory round. I have used this in nearly all my rifles and test rifles and it has proven to be the best, in my opinion all-rounder for accuracy and expansion of deer from CWD right up to Red`s. I have tested the ECX against a control sample lead cored bullet , the Sako 123 gr SP in .308 which in its self is a superb deer bullet lets see the difference in performance.?
