Today, I would like to share with you what I think is some of the rarest bullion silver pandas. These are not proof panda but BU, or brilliant uncirculated. There are 3 mints in China that produce panda coins. They are the Shanghai mint, Shenzhen mint and Shenyang mint. Due to the 3 different mints and different striking dies being produced, there are many varieties of panda coins being struck. Some are really rare and command a high price. First up, the 1995 micro date variety is among the rarest coins in the entire silver series. They are also known as the “small twig small date” variety. The population estimate for this coin is less than 4000. This compares to the large twig large date variety with a population estimate of less than 98,000. Here is how to distinguish the difference between the micro date and the large twig large date variety. The micro date has a small twig in the panda side and if I draw 2 straight lines from the stairs on the temple of heaven side, the date 1995 will be within the 2 lines. The large twig large date variety will have 1995 outside of the 2 lines. NGC population for MS69 is only 624 as of February 2022. Let’s take a look at my 1995 micro date and how it compares to the large twig large date variety. The next rare silver BU panda is that of 1999 Large Date Serif 1. This is minted at the Shenzhen GuoBao mint. The silver 1999 10 Yuan is a key date coin. This Large Date with Serif 1 stands out as among the top 3 most scarce varieties in the entire 10 Yuan silver series. Look at the bottom of the 1 in 1999 to find the bar or serif. The estimated population is less than 7,000. This piece is a beautiful MS69. The NGC population for MS69 is only 402 pieces. The next piece of rare BU silver panda variety is that of the year 2000 mirrored ring. The year 2000 silver pandas are found in both frosted and mirrored ring variety. Recognition of the mirrored ring variety was accelerated by the publication of the first edition of Peter Anthony’s guide book. Prices of these coins soared. This is the most counterfeited silver panda in the market. Probably 99% of the ones on the market are fake and many are of excellent quality – but fake. Only very experienced numismatists can spot them. I suggest to buy only NGC or PCGS slabbed coins for this year 2000 variety to prevent being ripped off. This is a very expensive coin in high grade. Estimated population for the frosted ring is less than 73,000 while for the mirrored ring, it is less than 4,000. The mirrored ring variety was minted at the Shanghai mint. Only 509 pieces were graded by NGC as MS69. The last piece that I am going to share here is the year 2001 small D silver panda. This variety was only discovered in year 2012 – more than a decade after they were struck. Domestic coins meant for China’s market have a D on them just left of the panda. Those intended for exports do not have this D marking. The D coins are relatively available in China. Elsewhere they are rare. In 2012, it was discovered that there were 2 types of D markings. A large D and a small D. When news broke out that there was a new variety with small D, the market went crazy and frantic searched happened at the coin markets in China and few were found. In my opinion, I think the small D variety is even rarer than the more famous year 2000 mirrored ring. So few of them were graded by NGC that even after 21 years that they were first minted, only 176 were graded as MS69. The mintage on these small D is unknown. These are the 4 BU silver pandas that in my opinion are the rarest of all the pandas in the silver series.
