J.C. Newman and his family came to America in 1888, in search of the American dream. They settled in Cleveland, along with many other Hungarian Jews. While his brothers became tailors, J.C wanted to become a cigar maker and his mother paid an established cigar craftsman the hefty sum of $3.00 a month to teach her son the art of cigar making. In 1895, he established the J.C. Newman Cigar Company. The company flourished and in 1954 he moved his business and his family to Tampa. He purchased the dormant Regensburg Cigar Factory in Ybor City, which featured a four-sided clock tower, and bore the nickname "El Reloj" - "The Clock". When the J.C. Newman Company was established in 1895, there were 42,000 licensed cigar makers in the United States. Today there is only one that has been continuously family owned and operated - J.C. Newman. In this clip, J.C.'s grandson, Eric Newman, company president, explains the significance of El Reloj to daily life in Ybor City at the height of the cigar industry.
