The Rickard's Callibaetis is a tried and tested still water Baetis pattern. It is fairly easy to tie and uses a small number of materials. Start your thread on the hook, taking it all the way to the bend of the hook. Both the tails and the wing case use Mallard flank feathers in a Woodduck color. Take about eight fibers from the feather's stem to use as the tails. Measure the tails to be about the length of the hook shank. Tie them in right at the base of the hook on the top, center of the hook. Next, tie in a piece of small copper wire, securing it back at the base of the tails. Turn again to the Mallard flank and remove 12 to 15 fibers to use as your wing case. Cut the tips off evenly and secure them to the center top of the hook to the base of the tails. Dub the body using a Hare's mask dubbing - dubbed pretty tight. Dub the body from the base of the tails to two hook eye lengths behind the eye. Next, tie in a Grizzly hackle feather. Size the feather so that it is shorter than the width of the hook gap. Take open spiral wraps of the hackle back to the base of the tails. While still holding the hackle firmly, use the copper wire to capture and secure the hackle at the wing base. Now take open spiral wraps of the copper wire back towards the hook eye, through the hackle. This will more firmly secure the hackle and make the fly more durable. Secure and remove the copper wire. Finally, fold the Mallard flank wing case over the center top of the fly, securing it about an eye length behind the eye. Remove the balance of the flank feather by cutting it very close. Build up a small head and whip finish. The fly is ready to go.
