Speaker: Nadine Igonin, Ph. D., Assistant Professor, Geoscience Department, The University of Texas at Dallas There have been recorded earthquakes in Texas since the early 1900s, and all six major basins in Texas can be associated with different kinds of man-made seismicity. Risk analysis of the individual clusters of seismicity shows that both injection type (e.g., wastewater disposal, hydraulic fracturing) and location within the basin are important factors for determining regions of statistically unexpected earthquakes. The western Delaware basin in particular has larger than expected magnitudes and fault structures that produce long-lived seismicity. The uplift/subsidence patterns of the land from satellite data further reveal the potential role of aseismic slip in driving and sustaining the seismicity. All together, this talk gives a conceptual breakdown of how, where and why seismicity is occurring across Texas.
