PROSPER: Proactive Reduction of Suicide in Populations via Evidence-based Research

Presented on March 12, 2025 by Kent A. Corso, PsyD, BCBA-D According to the CDC, 2022 marked the highest year of suicides in America to date. Even temporary reductions in suicide trends have not been maintained long term in any state or country in the developed free world. This presentation briefly reviews the suicidology literature and advocates for upstream solutions including critical roles for all healthcare providers, among others in the community such as parents, teachers, and supervisors. After this presentation, attendees will be able to: 1. Explain how suicide is a social problem - not simply a mental health one. 2. Analyze patterns and styles of helping that have unintended negative consequences and do not reduce suicide in communities longitudinally. 3. Apply evidence-based ways of reducing suicide risk to their current practice habits.
