For millennia rice has defined the cultures of East Asia. In Taiwan, rice is so central to the diet that “to eat,” chi-fan, literally means “eat rice.” In Gongliao, in the shadow of some of East Asia’s highest peaks, the lives of the people revolve around the growing of rice on steep mountainside terraces. The Hsiao family are rice farmers. They have farmed in Gongliao for 200 years. But unlike most Taiwanese rice farmers they don’t farm on the flat coastal plain. The Hsiao’s farm rice terraces cut into the steep hillsides. The terraces are free from pesticides and nature thrives alongside the farmers. Many of the creatures, found nowhere else on the planet, are endangered. But so too are the farmers, the keepers of the rice terraces. In Gongliao, in the shadow of some of East Asia’s highest peaks life follows ancient ways. For centuries the lives of the people have revolved around the growing of rice on steep mountainside terraces. Here on the terraces, free from pesticides, nature thrives alongside the farmers. Many of the creatures, found nowhere else on the planet, are endangered. But so too are the farmers, the keepers of the rice terraces. With their passing will this utopia disappear with them? The Hsiao’s farm rice terraces cut into the steep hillsides. The terraces are free from pesticides and nature thrives alongside the farmers. Many of the creatures, found nowhere else on the planet, are endangered. But so too are the farmers, the keepers of the rice terraces. Hsiao Chun-yi, at 60 is the youngest of the farmers. The others are all in their 70s and 80s. The farmers are the custodians of the old rice terraces. Possessing knowledge of ancient farming ways, they work as part of the natural order, not against it. ince ancient times, these farmers have followed the timeless ways of the calendar of the 24 seasons. Starting around the Lunar New Year, the calendar follows the subtle natural rhythms of the sun telling the farmer when to plow, sow and harvest. The steep hillsides are inaccessible to modern machinery so work is done the old way. As the farmers tend the terraces, the lives of the creatures they share the terraces with also unfold. A family of Formosan Blue Magpies faces the struggle of raising the next generation. In the dead of night the miracle of Emerald Tree-Frog’s bubble nest ensures their continued presence on the terraces. That is, if a violent summer typhoon doesn’t destroy everything.
