As some of you know, I was fortunate enough to come up during the 'hey day' of 80s 'thrash'. What a glorious time it was due to the unabashedly lack of constraint AND the newfound territory heavy music was pursuing. AND, in the 2020's the nomenclature of 'retro' thrash (as foreign as that may sound to metal vets), is quite rewarding & illustrious; because at its core it not only reflects an homage to 80's thrash, but a new found respect as modern underground thrash bands like Hatriot, Power Trip OR POWERHOUSE continue to raise the flag & assure the genre, not only survives, but thrives. One band from the 80's which certainly made its mark ironically with ONLY one release,...the intense, 'Victims Of Science' was Arlington, TX's, Gammacide! While short-lived (with their initial career spanning from 1986-1992), Gammacide established their mark as one of the Lonestar state's MOST intense acts with their speedy dual guitar attack courtesy of Rick Perry & Scott Shelby & the one-of-a-kind vocal attack of frontman & cajun beast, Mr. Varnum Ponville. NOW, with the 35th anniversary of VOS, the band has reunited in 2025 (with their debut performance at this year's Hell's Heroes) to headline their own tour. SO, when the band stopped in SA on October 10th, 2025, the RMW Crew went out to support & catch up with Rick & Varnum. In the interview below you see us discuss the following: the band's initial demise, the Hell's Heroes show in Houston, new fans, Texas metal, nostalgia, the intensity of Gammacide, European festivals, NEW music & MORE! SO, I hope ALL the thrash fans around the world will WATCH this one & catch up with one of the genres founding fathers. To Varnum & Rick - THANK YOU for your jovial attitude & goodwill. I wish you guys nothing but the best in 2026. ENJOY! ~ El Mero Metal
