The Smith's drummer, Mike Joyce undergoes a Heart CT scan at Pall Mall's private hospital in Newton-le-Willows. Mike is almost 60 and has a history of heart disease in his family with his father having a heart attack in his 40’s. He hasn’t previously had any heart tests but wants to take steps now to give himself peace of mind. He was surprised with how easy the process was. What is a heart CT scan? A heart CT scan can detect heart disease in its earliest stages and help diagnose problems before they become life-threatening. The scan is a quick, convenient, non-invasive way of evaluating the amount of calcified (hard) plaque in the heart vessels and can provide a first indication that you may be at a higher risk of having a heart attack. You’ll be asked to lie on a bed that moves into the CT scanner. The bed moves a few millimetres at a time until the scan is finished, which will take from 20 minutes to an hour. The scanner consists of a ring that rotates around a small section of your body as you pass through it. Unlike an MRI scanner, it doesn't surround your whole body at once so you won’t feel enclosed. There are many reasons why you should book in for a CT scan. It's fast, easy and painless and could save your life, with results within only a few days. Do I meet the criteria to undergo a heart CT scan? We would encourage anyone to book in for a heart CT scan if they meet any of the criteria below: family history of heart disease you’re a woman over 50 you’re a man over 40 you have a red meat or high dairy diet you have a high alcohol intake you lead an inactive lifestyle or you are overweight you have diabetes you are an active or previous smoker
