Recently the Te Ara Awataha project in Northcote, was recognised for its regeneration mahi and strategic partnerships by the Taituarā Local Government Excellence Awards for 2021. Eke Panuku, on behalf of the wider project team (including Mana Whenua and Kāinga Ora) was proud to receive the Environmental Leadership Award for this ground-breaking restoration project. It is the first time since 2012 that a council-controlled organisation has won such an Excellence Award. The Te Ara Awataha project has seen the collaboration of conservation-minded stakeholders over recent years on the journey to regenerating the Awataha Stream and the creation of a shared walking and cycling path, native riparian planting and play destinations. Te Ara Awataha captured the judges attention this year for its interweaving of Te Ao Māori, urban design and environmental remediation principles. They recognised the project for being an outstanding collaborative piece of placemaking ‘that goes beyond just a physical corridor to employment, social procurement and educational objectives. A project that demonstrates a regard for all four dimensions of well-being.’
