On 4 March 2026, naval history was made in the Indian Ocean. A United States Navy attack submarine successfully engaged and sank the Iranian Moudge-class frigate, IRIS Dena, marking the first combat kill by a US Navy torpedo since the end of World War II. In this video, we break down the tactical engagement that took place 25 nautical miles south of Galle, Sri Lanka. From the IRIS Dena’s participation in the MILAN 2026 exercises to the moment the Mk 48 heavyweight torpedo struck, we analyse the massive mismatch in technology and the "blind spots" that led to the Iranian vessel’s destruction. What you will learn in this video: -The technical specifications of the IRIS Dena and the Moudge-class frigate. -How the US Navy tracked the vessel following the MILAN 2026 naval exercises. -The physics of a Mk 48 torpedo strike: Why "under the keel" detonation is so lethal. -The historical significance: Comparing this to the HMS Conqueror and the ARA General Belgrano. The IRIS Dena was a 1,500-tonne warship armed with anti-ship missiles, yet its lack of advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capabilities left it vulnerable to the silent threat of a nuclear-powered attack submarine. This engagement proves that in modern naval warfare, if you can’t see the threat below, you cannot survive it.
