As Ugandans continue to recover from the traumatic events surrounding the 2026 elections, the regime of Yoweri Museveni has sought to portray the process as a legitimate democratic exercise. However, many citizens contend that what occurred was not a genuine election, but rather a militarized operation marked by widespread arrests, abductions, enforced disappearances, killings, and the continued detention of numerous individuals in prisons and torture facilities. In response, Ugandans have been resharing videos and photographs documenting the actions of security forces under General Museveni’s leadership—forces that critics argue are unlikely to face accountability. The objective of these efforts is to expose the systemic abuses and to appeal to Western governments that have long maintained diplomatic and financial ties with Museveni’s administration. Foreign funding and military assistance, intended to support Uganda’s development and security, have instead been used to suppress political opposition and target civilians. In this commentary, I will present video evidence that, in the view of many observers and myself, illustrates how the events in question resembled a military operation rather than a democratic election. Notably, opposition leader Bobi Wine remains in hiding following threats from the Commander of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and a failed attempt by security forces to arrest him.
