Allow me to introduce the lovely Smith and Wesson Model 629, in .44 Magnum. I'm already a fan of S&W wheelguns (love the 686P, whether I'm shooting .38 special or those zippity .357 Magnum rounds), but I've been drooling over the 629 since I first shot Hickok45's snubbie .44 at the Compound in Tennessee this past summer. I fired one cylinder, all in double action, and fell in love. I've always had a preference for larger caliber handguns, and the 629 does not disappoint. The 240 grain jacketed hollow point (JHP) Blazer rounds exploded out the barrel with a kick that I felt all through my arm, but the weight of the large steel N frame soaks up just enough recoil that it was still fun to shoot 50 rounds later. For this range experience, I rented the 6" barrel version (closer to the blued S&W .44 Clint Eastwood made famous in Dirty Harry). I fired my second cylinder through a 629, and wondered why it was I didn't already have one of my own. After a little warm up to refamiliarize myself with how the hand cannon handled, I was ready to wield it against my old foe: the squirrel (tree rats with furry tails - yuck!). From 35', I unloaded six rounds of hot .44 Magnum. Safe to say the classy 629 won out against its vermin opponent. Goodbye, Mr. Squirrel.
