2/1/19 The Generalized Reuse Framework is a strategic reuse model for systems engineering management that addresses both investment and leverage of reuse through two interrelated and interacting processes: Development with Reuse (DWR) and Development for Reuse (DFR). • Development with Reuse (DWR): a set of system development activities that focus on gaining benefits from utilizing or leveraging previously developed reusable artifacts, either in a planned process or an ad hoc manner • Development for Reuse (DFR): a set of system development activities dedicated to developing reusable artifacts for future usages, generally in a planned manner or through an investment effort This process model addresses planned reuse strategies as applied to agile systems engineering, product line engineering, and evolution of system capability through incremental development. It considers the fact that a product or product line is developed by a series of projects, each of which produces a number of articles or baseline versions. In each article or version release, there is a mix of the DWR and the DFR contents. With careful planning, the relative mix of DWR and DFR content changes favorably with increasing number of articles produced or release versions deployed and, as a result, achieving the desirable economic benefits. This paper summarizes the latest development of this framework from three different angles – an ontology of reuse, the DWR and DFR categories, reuse strategies and decision processes as applied to incremental system development and product line engineering through a set of planned reuse scenarios. Bio: Gan Wang, Ph.D., is a Global Engineering Fellow at BAE Systems and the Chief Engineer for its Integrated Defense Solutions business. He has been actively engaged in the areas of systems engineering, particularly MBSE, engineering management, and cost estimating and analysis. He has over 25 years of experience in complex system development, software development, system and enterprise architecture, modeling & simulation, multi-criteria decision making methods, and system-of-systems engineering involving complex, software-intensive systems. He is a regular instructor within the company and a frequent author of these subject areas. Prior to BAE Systems, Dr. Wang spent many years developing real-time geospatial data visualization applications for mission planning and rehearsal, battlefield management, command-and-control (C2), fligh
