(2 Dec 1997) English/Nat As more than 120 nations gather to sign a treaty banning anti-personnel mines, thoughts will turn to the Princess of Wales, who campaigned so hard to end their use up until her death in August. Campaigners say Princess Diana would have been very proud of the Ottawa Treaty - which is being seen as a tribute to her work. Pictures of Princess Diana walking on a path cleared through a mine field during a trip to Angola earlier this year helped draw attention to the problem of landmines which kill and maim 25-thousand people every year. Despite courting controversy during the trip, particularly in her native Britain, Diana said she was determined to highlight the problem of mines and the plight of victims. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It has convinced me that I must continue to play a part in the on going worldwide campaign to ban landmines. I hope that my visit will encourage others to join the campaign and ease the plight of the victims of land mines here in Angola and all over the world." David Hillman, campaigns officer for the UK Working Group on Landmines, met Diana shortly before her death. He says Diana would have supported not only the banning of landmines, but the efforts to help rehabilitate victims. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The Prince of wales campaigned to have a ban, so what's been signed in Ottawa is a fantastic tribute to her because it not only bans landmines but it also creates the provisions for demining and also for rehabilitation of mine victims which she really cared about."
