CataractCoach™ 2376: calcified IOLs can be difficult to cut and explant

There are some IOLs that can become opacified in certain circumstances. This is may be due to deposition of calcium within the lens material over time. The only solution is an IOL exchange surgery where the calcified IOL is explanted. Normally to explant an IOL, we prefer the twist-and-out method but for this case, it makes more sense to create a wider scleral tunnel incision and remove the IOL whole in a planar manner. This is because with the deposition of the calcium this IOL becomes very rigid and hard -- almost like the mineralization process of bone tissue. In this case the entire IOL plus capsular bag complex comes out of the eye so the surgeon performs scleral fixation of the new IOL. What is your experience with these calcified IOLs?
