We’re back with a new video in our National Trust partnership series. In today’s video, we go behind the scenes at Winkworth Arboretum to explore what it takes to maintain this beautiful space and how dead wood can be beneficial to the wildlife in your garden. 🔶 About Winkworth Arboretum Winkworth Arboretum is a scenic National Trust preserved woodland on a hill with a lake and wildflowers. It is located in Surrey, England, and spans over 100 acres. Winkworth Arboretum is home to over 6,000 trees, including 1,000 different species. The grounds are also home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, squirrels, and birds. 🔶 Behind the Scenes with Jane Moore and Graham Alderton Speaking to Graham Alderton, Head Gardener at Winkworth Arboretum, he explains what an arboretum is and how Winkworth Arboretum originated. Graham explains how this site is a younger arboretum, in comparison to others across the country. He also talks about how the arboretum was started by Dr Fox, who was a consultant dermatologist. He was working in London, then once retired he brought parcels of land around Godalming, including Winkworth Farm. He started to plant trees based on information from his friends, Harold Hillier and William Jackson Bean, and he started to plant the landscape with trees. Planting can be difficult, as it’s hard to know how specific trees are going to react when planted in different locations so it’s important to look at the succession of the trees. For example, the Nothofagus tree they have on-site is around 80 years old, so they’ve planted another relatively close to it as part of their succession plan. Handing over to Sam and Kirstin, the arborists at Winkworth, they talk about their upcoming Habitat Day, where they will be using STIHL machinery to recreate the natural veteranisation of a tree and how storm damage and wind damage would affect them. Thanks to the partnership between STIHL and the National Trust, Winkworth Arboretum landscapes and gardens are carefully maintained with state-of-the-art equipment. Visitors can roam the gardens, thanks to STIHL cordless leaf blowers, which are used to clear the walkways. We hope you’ve enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look at Winkworth Arboretum.
