In this recording, Daniela-Carmen Stoica shares the sound of Aromanian/Vlach, a language variety spoken (and sung!) in many Balkan countries. Daniela recorded this poem at the RISE UP #VoicesOfCommunity Artistic Residency in Barcelona in 2024. She is a full-time professor and Head of the Department of Foreign Languages at the Faculty of Education and Philology at “Fan S. Noli” University of Korçë (UNIKO). Highly multilingually and interculturally attuned, Daniela has a good knowledge of Aromanian and has acted as a cultural ambassador in international research groups and organisations, e.g the Foundation for Endangered Languages. Mănuși albi (White Gloves) - Author: Spiru Fuchi The poem is built around the image of the white gloves, seen as a symbol of the rapid modernization of the Aromanian communities giving up on their traditional professions, which used to be done mainly by hand, using no protection such as gloves. In the second part of the poem the symbol of the white gloves acquires deeper meanings- the while gloves stand for Aromanians’ ethnical assimilations. In clear contrast with the white gloves are the red hands, covered with blood, hiding inside the white gloves, thus standing for Aromanians’ sacrifices during the battles they fought throughout their history to preserve their identity.
