How to overhaul a Shimano CB E110 coaster brake hub! 1. Remove the reaction arm from the bike frame. 2. Remove the axle nuts. 3. Remove the wheel from the bike. 4. Remove the sprocket (cog) by removing the snap ring with a small flat head screwdriver. 5. Measure how much of the axle sticks out for reference when you reassemble. 6. On the sprocket side loosen the locknut while holding the cone nut. 7. Remove the locknut and any axle spacers. 8. Remove the cone nut while holding the reaction arm on the opposite side. 9. Remove the first set of ball bearings. 10. Remove the right side dust cap. 11. The axle on the opposite side of the hub assembly will drop out now, possibly the brake pads too. 12. Remove the locknut from the reaction arm on the axle. 13. Remove the reaction arm washer and any axle spacers. 14. Remove the reaction arm. 15. Remove the left side dust cap. 16. Remove the brake cone. 17. Remove the second set of ball bearings. Everything should be off the axle now. 18. Now, inside the hub shell, remove the driver 19. Remove the last set of ball bearings. 20. Remove the clutch cone unit. 21. Remove the spring from the clutch cone unit. Twist and pull it out in the direction in which the spring is coiled. 22. Remove the washer from the clutch cone unit. 23. Soak everything in solvent and clean with a toothbrush, and dry with a rag. 24. Grease the clutch, washer and spring, and reassemble the clutch cone unit. 25. Grease the axle. 26. Grease the brake cone and thread it onto the axle. 27. Install the left side dust cap. 28. Install the reaction arm. 29. Install the washer, and then any axle spacers. 30. Install the locknut and tigthen it with the same amount of axle showing as before. 31. Grease the first set of ball bearings and install them next to the dust cap with the rounded edges facing away, toward the center of the axle. 32. Grease the inside of the hub shell 33. Install the clutch cone unit into the hub shell with the spring facing outward from the side of the hub shell with the larger opening. 34. Grease the brake pads and drop them into the hub shell with the larger edges facing outward from the same side of the hub shell. 35. Slip the axle through the hub from the same side of the hub shell. The notches on the brake cone should mesh with the brake pads. 36. Flip the wheel over so you can see the other side of the hub shell. 37. Grease the second set of ball bearings and install them in the hub shell with the rounded edges facing down, toward the center of the hub. 38. Grease the driver and install it into the hub shell. 39. Grease the last set of ball bearings and install them in the hub shell with the rounded edges facing down, toward the center of the hub. 40. Install the cone nut, and then any axle spacers. 42. Install the locknut but leave it loose. 43. Install the right side dust cap. 44. Install the sprocket and snap ring. 45. Clean up any excess grease. 46. Adjust the hub. 46a. The cone nut should be finger tight to begin with. 46b. To tighten the hub assembly further, turn the cone nut clockwise while holding the reaction arm. 46c. When finished adjusting, hold the cone nut with a wrench and tighten the locknut on the same side. 46d. To adjust the hub in the future all you need to do is hold the cone nut with a wrench and loosen the locknut to unlock the hub assembly again. 47. Install the wheel on the bike and wrap the bike chain around the sprocket. 48. Adjust the chain tension and check chainline. The wheel should be centered in the frame, and the chain should have just a little slack (single speed bike). 49. Tighten the axle nuts to secure the wheel to the bike frame. 50. Secure the reaction arm to the bicycle frame with the metal clip, screw and nut. To adjust, unlock the hub assembly by turning a cone nut counter clockwise while holding the locknut on the same side. 2.
