In this video you can see Chichi-sugi Japanese Cedar, located in Okinoshima Town in the Oki Islands (Dōgo Island). In the second half of the video, fog creeps in to reveal an almost mystical feeling scene. Chichi-sugi is said to be 800 years old. Its mysterious shape is different from the shape of normal Japanese cedar trees. If you look at the tree’s branches, you will notice that they extend outward, but change direction partway to reach upward. This shape is a characteristic of Japanese cedars found on the Sea of Japan side of the country; the change of direction is to help prevent the branches from breaking when burdened with snow. The terrain surrounding Chichi-sugi is scattered with rocks and lacking in topsoil, making it difficult to absorb moisture from the ground. Because of this, the drooping parts hanging down from the branches are thought to have grown to absorb moisture from the air, like the fog you see in this video. This giant, mysteriously shaped tree has been an object of worship for the local people, and is also known as Iwakura Shrine. This is a mysterious place where you can experience all three of our geopark’s themes: geohistory, unique ecosystem, and lifestyles and traditions of the local people.
