"Maarte" - Proof of Concept @CanonUSA

"Maarte" (meaning "dramatic" or "diva" in Tagalog) is a coming-of-age short film about Sana, an aspiring actress who must defy her traditional Filipino mother's expectations to become a nurse, when she drops out of school to attend her first audition. This is a very special story that I started writing a year ago. It means so much to me because it is a love letter to my mom, gives representation to Filipino Americans, and destigmatizes the word maarte within my culture. As I was writing this story I knew it was going to something meaningful. I've already gathered a good portion of my crew to make this and I am close to finalizing the story. This $25k would be exactly what I need to make my vision come to life! We even have a budget already outlined, we are ready and eager to make this short film happen! Making this proof of concept was such a great experience, I am lucky to be able to work with such talented cast and crew! I am excited to work with them in future when we make the full "Maarte" short film! I've been dreaming of making a film like this since the 6th grade.
