Great to have renowned Furniture Expert Lennox Cato with a real 'Rolls Royce' Piece of English Furniture. An interesting and highly collectible early English Georgian period mahogany Sheraton period (circa 1790) free standing writing table or desk. This beautifully drawn elegant article has an inset leather lined top. The rectangular top with rounded projected corners, turned tapering fluted legs topped with ‘tassels’. Three mahogany lined frieze drawers with later brass handles. The whole is very much in the influence of Gillow’s of Lancaster. Note two interesting features the vertical strips on the rounded corners, and small flush locking drawers in the frieze towards the back of the table. English circa 1790. Literature 18th century English Furniture ‘The Norman Adams Collection. Reference page number 146; You will also find an almost identical item of fine English furniture in the Grade 1 listed National Trust property; Uppark House, South Harting, Petersfield. Apparently this table (NT 137689) was presumably acquired by Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh (1754-1846). It has been suggested that it could be the work of the firm of cabinet makers Gillows of Lancaster.
