During the Neolithic Orkney's population of farmers and pastoralists, known as the Groove ware people, inhabited extensive village settlements, built huge megalithic complexes and developed monumental funerary architecture. Neolithic Orkney was buzzing with activity, both practical and ceremonial. In the first part of this two episode series I discuss the main features of Neolithic Orkney's settlements, including those found at the famous sites of Skara Brae and the Ness of Brodgar. In around 2500 BCE these villages were abandoned and, at least in the case of the Ness of Brodgar, a giant feast was held where hundreds of cattle were sacrificed. No-one knows why these people left their settlements, but what's for sure, is that while they were there they certainly left their mark in the landscape. #ancienthistory#Neolithic #Orkney #Scotland ✨ IN THIS EPISODE 00:00 Introduction 00:47 The Orkney Archipelago 02:26 The Knap of Howar 02:59 Skara Brae 05:16 The Ness of Brodgar 07:01 Barnhouse Settlement 07:41 The Orkney Venus ✨ JOIN MY CHANNEL / @megalithhunter ✨ REFERENCES Heart of Neolithic Orkney https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/514/ Historic Environment Scotland https://www.historicenvironment.scot/ Ness of Brodgar www.nessofbrodgar.co.uk ✨ MUSIC CREDIT Music I Use: https://www.bensound.com/free-music-f...
