After decades of research now we know how important it is to learn things in a relatively wide context. Still there are many students who believe that cramming the material is much easier. This is because we forget that learning is not only about acquiring. It is also about being able to use the materials in practice. Fergus I. M. Craik and Robert S. Lockhart described in 1972 memory recall of stimuli as a function of the depth of mental processing. Deeper levels of analysis produce more elaborate, longer lasting, much stronger memory traces than shallow levels of analysis. Shallow processing (based on phonemic and orthographic components only) leads to a fragile memory trace that is prone to quick deterioration. On the other hand, deep processing (semantic processing) results in a more durable memory trace. Craik& Lockhart argued that rehearsal that consists simply of repeating previous analyses (maintenance rehearsal) doesn't enhance long-term memory. In other words, reading the same text over and over multiple times will not be enough for us to learn what we need. To memorize something we need process it semantically: analyze it, connect with other facts, draw conclusions, think of reasons, critique, use in context.
