Ohio State doctors are increasing awareness of the risk and symptoms of ovarian cancer, which affects approximately one in 70 women in the U.S. Most women can be at risk for ovarian cancer, but there are factors that can increase those chances, including the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Women at higher risk for the disease should work with their doctors to create plans that could reduce risk, and increase the chances of early detection. Unfortunately, the earliest signs of ovarian cancer can be subtle — bloating, indigestion, changes in bladder and bowel habits — which can lead to diagnoses at later stages. Despite those challenges, there are a variety of effective treatments, as well as methods for identifying recurrence early, in order to increase the chances of successful outcomes. "Advanced stage ovarian cancer has a higher rate of coming back in the future, Casey Cosgrove, MD, says. "That’s why we're focusing on identifying these cancers earlier when we have the best opportunity for cure, and also looking at ways that we can maximize our treatments at advanced stages so that we can achieve more cures."
