ARTSPLIT PRESENTS MOCONA: ODE TO MASTERY - EDOSA OGIUGO

Born in 1961 in Nigeria, Edosa Ogiugo is best known for his eclectic colour palette and studies that address the movement of the human body through the use of contorted postures and unexpected vantage points. As a child, Edosa used to draw on any surface he could find, guiding him into his purpose as a fine artist. He received a Higher National Diploma in Fine Arts and Painting, and a National Diploma in General Arts from Yaba College of Technology. His artistic prowess spans across fields of advertising, media production, graphic design, art education, and community advocacy. Edosa began practicing as a full-time artist in 1992 and he has studio spaces in Lagos and Port-Harcourt. Skillfully applying rich textures of oil, his canvases display distorted figurative compositions characterized by dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork. In his paintings, he engages with themes related to cultural values and searches for identity and belonging. Strongly influenced by Edgar Degas’ paintings of ballerinas and Claude Monet’s water lilies series, he captures the energy and rhythm of dancers from various Nigerian tribes, market scenes, and equestrian activities. These elements reveal his interest in the nature of movement and how humans interact with their environment.
