Making the jump from buying starters at your local store to starting your own plants from seed can be intimidating. Here are 5 things you can do to help ensure success! 1:20 STAY ORGANIZED If you're starting your own seeds, things can quickly get chaotic. You've got seed packs and bags of soil and trays and labels... Before I actually plant anything, I like to get everything set up with soil in the cells and then to label those. This is all based on how many plants I know I'll need and can fit in the garden. 2:14 SOIL Using the right soil is key. Sure, seeds probably can in all sorts of conditions (weeds growing through cracks in the street?!), but we want to give our seeds the BEST chance to grow well. Usually, seed starting mix is great for starting but not sustaining. That means we amend with a liquid fertilizer once the true leaves show. That's because the seed contains enough nutrients to break the soil but that's about it. 4:20 MOISTURE In order to germinate, seeds need an appropriate temperature, and they need moisture. Instead of filling up the cells with soil and then immediately planting, I take a day to soak the soil and also let it wick up water from the bottom tray. This saturates the soil and allows it to absorb as much water as it needs but won't be totally soaked. 6:07 SEED DEPTH Always check the back of your seed pack for info. Generally, you don't want to bury the seed much more than the height of the seed. Lots of seeds are really small, so it's often easier to sift soil across the top or just make a tiny divot. That means sticking a hole in your soil with your finger usually isn't the best way. Seeds buried too deep won't be able to break the surface. Also, any pieces of wood, etc. that are on top of a seed can definitely stop your seeds from germinating. This is why sifting is so helpful! 13:09 MAINTAIN MOISTURE Finally, seedlings need to stay moist - not soaked - in order to grow. The root systems are so small and can't dry out. Depending on where you place your trays, you might need to add water every day or every couple of days to make sure the soil stays moist. You can poke the soil of your soil to check regularly.
