Thorvald Hansen’s Romance and Scherzo for cornet and piano begins with a nostalgic and idyllic Romance section, then followed by a dramatic and bugle-like Scherzo. The Scherzo, initially set in the key of F Minor, experiences a picardy third turnaround. Hansen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. As a young man, he enrolled at the Tivoli Concert Hall Orchestra and in 1884, became a solo trumpeter at the Royal Danish Orchestra. Nine years later, in 1893, he attained the position as a Trumpet professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Music.
