#Parkinsons Disease, the second-most common #neurodegenerative disorder in the United States, is marked by the gradual loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. The earliest signs are subtle motor changes that can precede a clinical diagnosis by years but are often difficult to detect with the naked eye. That’s where artificial intelligence could make a transformative difference. On the latest episode of #InsideUMiamiMedicine, Ihtsham ul Haq, M.D., chief of the Movement Disorders Division at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, shared how he and his team are using artificial intelligence to bring greater objectivity, consistency and speed to Parkinson’s diagnoses. But early detection is only part of the challenge. Dr. Haq believes that stem cell therapy, which involves transplanting dopamine-producing cells directly into the brains of Parkinson’s patients, may be the first big step toward a regenerative therapy that could slow or even reverse the disease.
