From the archives: Menominee Warrior Society takes over Alexian Brothers Novitiate in 1975

In January 1975, a group of men from the Menominee tribe took over the former Alexian Brothers Novitiate near Gresham, Wisconsin. Calling themselves the Menominee Warrior Society, the group demanded the tribe be given ownership of the property. The monthlong standoff included tensions with local law enforcement officials, and the National Guard was called in in case the dispute turned violent. The standoff ended in early February with ownership of the property transferred from the religious order to the tribe. The Menominee tribe would give up the property within a year, however.
