In the spring of 2022, Texas woman Jordan Thornton went to a club called Cheeky Monkey, during her trip to Midigama, Sri Lanka. She and a friend were sitting at the bar when they were approached by another group, who demanded they move. Nikolaj Omby Ibsen, a social media influencer from Denmark, and his girlfriend, Lene Marie Schack, were identified by Thornton in a social media post as being part of the group. Thornton and her friend refused to move, telling the others that there were more open seats nearby. The group began pushing and verbally harassing them at which point Thornton pulled out her phone to record the altercation. As seen in the clip, Schack knocked the device out of Thornton’s hand and then reportedly punched her. Thornton pushed the woman away and moved to return to her seat. Her cell phone continued recording after it dropped and, seconds later, a shattering sound was heard. Ibsen had picked up an empty glass and, while standing roughly a metre from Thornton, launched it full force at her face. The young woman remembered that he wound his arm back and threw it “like it was a baseball”, before quickly fleeing the scene. The glass shattered on impact and Thornton suffered devastating facial injuries. She remembered being in shock after shards had gotten in her mouth and eyes. Thornton spat out pieces of glass before realising the full damage. Aside from sustaining multiple lacerations to the bottom half of her face, her upper lip was split open. A photo of the injury showed a stream of blood that went down to her chest. Thornton remembered "My lip was basically hanging off my face in three different areas and that's when I really began to panic. I had to go to three different hospitals over the span of three hours” The clinics had reportedly refused to treat her due to the severity of her injuries but she eventually found a hospital in the city of Galle. She underwent three hours of surgery and received stitches to four areas of her face. Thornton returned to the US and recovered following months of rehabilitation. An arrest warrant was put out for Ibsen but, by the late summer of 2022, he remained at large. Sri Lankan authorities suspected that he’d returned to Denmark or travelled to the UK and Thornton feared that interest in her case had been lost. In a social media post Ibsen claimed that neither he nor his friends were responsible for disfiguring the young woman. Like Thornton, the man was an avid traveller who’d previously posted photos of his trips to his Instagram. His original account was no longer available in the attack’s wake but it was suspected that he continued using the platform under a different name.
