Professional Clinician Jeff Davis answers: I have a 4-year-old Quarter Horse/Standardbred cross. She did not come from the best situation and was under weight when I got her. I’ve gained her trust and have been working with her. She rides amazingly but there are a few issues I have. First, she does not like her ears being touched. That’s not a big deal to me, but I’d love to be able to touch them. Second, she has lost her brakes. When I first started riding her, I knew she was a little harder mouthed, but she’d stop. Now she refuses to stop and pulls through the bit. I’m using a curb/grazing bit with her because I was told she hates a snaffle. I’m trying to train her for barrels, but I need advice on what bits or bitless options you’d suggest? Any tips or drills to help her find her brakes again?
