The Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice (CSSGJ) is pleased to host Andreas Bieler and Vincenzo Maccarrone for the launch of their edited volume Critical Political Economy of the European Polycrisis (Edward Elgar, 2025). The book intervenes in debates about Europe’s multiple overlapping crises – economic stagnation, political instability, ecological breakdown, and geopolitical conflict – by rejecting the idea that these are merely temporary disruptions. Instead, it advances a structural analysis rooted in critical political economy, showing how the polycrisis is produced by the dynamics of European capitalism itself. In this book launch event, Bieler and Maccarrone will outline the core arguments of the volume and discuss how neoliberal restructuring, financialisation, austerity, and uneven development have generated chronic instability across the European Union. We will also hear from Alan Cafruny, Rosalind Cavaghan, Nikolai Huke and Giuseppe Montalbano about their particular chapters. The Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice (CSSGJ) is an independent and critically oriented research centre dedicated to promoting free education.
