When you think of the cities that make America what it has become, Cincinnati may not spring to mind, but it certainly deserves to be in the conversation. For almost 100 years, from the early 1800s to around 1900, it ranked among the 10 largest cities in America and until the 1960s it had a population of over half a million. It played a pivotal role in transportation along the Ohio river and would also develop into a significant manufacturing hub. Construction and architecture in the city reflected the city’s significance. It even was given the nickname "The Paris of America" because of all of its extremely high end, cutting edge architecture. Several weeks ago I made a video about Pittsburgh and a number of the comments said I should go to Cincinnati next as there were a lot of similarities between the two.…. And since I’ve never been to Cincinnati it seemed like the perfect excuse to take a trip there. Being the architecture and construction history nerd that I am, I usually start planning my trips by finding the most fascinating structures in the city. I didn’t know much about Cincinnati, but as I started to look into its architecture and its history, I was increasingly excited for my visit. From a spectacular art deco train station to the first reinforced concrete skyscraper to a critical predecessor to the Brooklyn Bridge… Cincinnati is absolutely packed with awesome stuff.
