How has India's relationship with China evolved since the days of Cold War 'non-alignment'? What kind of strains are the two nations experiencing in their engagement? How important are China's investments in India? Will Japan and Australia, fellow members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (also known as the "Quad") play a role in the balance of power between India and China? "India has become a little bit more skeptical of China," as an investor in certain sectors says Dr. Sheila A. Smith, John E. Merow senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, "But largely, the question of late has not been about economic issues, it's really been about the Chinese behavior on the border. And so the northern border that China and India share, remember, there was a there was a war between those two countries up over that border in 1962. [...] It is an area that is really important to both countries in terms of their strategic sense of strength or vulnerability, of protecting their national boundaries. And there there have been skirmishes in the last several years, in fact outright, I would say conflict, not just skirmishes, but there have been use of force issues where the Chinese have not receded. And the two armies have really locked, locked weapons, they have locked, locked heads against each other. So that has been a blight, I think on the India-China relationship." This interview was recorded in 2021.
