Maiden day for my 87" 3DHS Extra 300 SHP. This is my first giant scale plane. Will be flown in IMAC competition in Basic class. Plane is all electric with Xpwr 60 cc motor, Castle Creations Phoenix Edge HV160 ESC, two Glacier 6s 6000 mAh LiPo batteries in series, 24x10 Xoar prop, FrSky telemetry sensors for current, voltage and GPS, two Booma RC 2s 2800 mAh Li-Ion flight packs, Booma RC Smart Switch, FrSky Redundancy Bus (RB-10) and two FrSky X8R receivers. Custom modifications include a plug-n-play battery tray, self locking canopy latch, and push button arming. Although this is an ARF (in production and sold by Extreme Flight RC for nearly a decade and just discontinued - new version in the works) this plane took me six months to build. Most of that time was spent designing, building and testing a plug-n-play battery tray. Smith Precision Aircraft (SPA) did the laser cutting for all the parts required. See my build log (Rclad) on RCgroups.com. This plane fits with just a few inches to spare in my Chevy Volt, seen in the background during the pre-flight run-up. Jim Maupin assisted with pre-flight checks, adjusted trims during the maiden, and talked me through the whole procedure from start to finish. Jim is a full scale pilot with tons of experience building and flying giant scale planes. His advice and calm manner helped keep my nerves in check. Thanks to Ed Paul for taking the video. See part 2 for final landing.
