I got my 16 year-old hands on a copy of Garbage's Version 2.0 back in 1998, and that CD was put on heavy rotation on my Discman everywhere I went. The edgy and cutting edge arrangements together with Shirley Manson's sultry croon just connected with me during a time when I was going through a lot of adolescent emotional turmoil. 'The Trick Is To Keep Breathing' was a haunting track that accompanied many lonely bus rides and late night walks, and Daniel Shulman's bassline really melodically supported the whole arrangement with its laid back feel and dark drone. Shulman was often seen playing a Musicman Stingray in many pictures, so I believe this song was recorded on a Drop-D tuned one. I don't have a Musicman Stingray in my collection, so I've brought out the DGCF tuned Frankenbass and soloed the Dimarzio Split P in the middle position to try and cop a similar tone and vibe.
