Village of Brienz prepares for another evacuation due to rockslide risk

In the village of #Brienz-#Brinzauls in the #Swiss canton of #Graubünden, there is a renewed risk of a major rockslide. Almost a year and a half after the major rockslide, residents living near the area affected will once again have to prepare for a possible evacuation. In recent weeks, the uppermost part of the debris flow has again been moving strongly. According to the municipal management team, it has been more than 30 centimetres per day in some places since mid-September. As a result, up to 1.2 million cubic metres of rock debris could come loose and slide towards the village at a similar rate to last year. According to the authorities, the situation is expected to calm down. However, it cannot be ruled out that a stream of debris could be released from the pile of rubble. If the masses of rock move too quickly, they could slide over the existing pile of rubble and affect the entire village. In the interest of safety, the municipality has decided to move to phase ‘yellow’ and evacuate the village's 80-odd inhabitants as a precaution. The timing of the evacuation has not yet been determined. The authorities plan to inform the affected population at 7pm today.
