In this episode of What the Old Folk Knew, we gather at the hearth for Robert Burns’ timeless ballad John Barleycorn. This folkish poem tells the story of barley personified - sown, cut down, and reborn in the fiery spirit of whisky. Passed down through the ages, it preserves an ancient understanding of grain as more than food: a sacred companion in the cycles of life, death, and renewal. Read here from my great grandmother’s treasured volume of Burns, this piece carries both the poet’s voice and the love of kin who cherished his words. Join me as we keep alive the wisdom of the old folk.
