Disgusted at Donalda Laloge marrying Séraphin Poudrier just to alleviate her father's debts, Alexis Labranche again leaves on exile to the United States to search for gold. Finding out that self-exiled Alexis is in payment default for various taxes and loans, Sainte-Adèle's mayor Séraphin Poudrier seizes the occasion to satisfy his obsessive hatred for Alexis, aided by the town's postilion and bailiff Ovide Ruisselet. "La maison de l'exilé" (The Exiled's House) was made in 1961 and broadcasted as an episode of the famed CBC TV drama "Les belles histoires des pays d'en haut" (Beautiful Highcountry Tales). Blandly and routinely shot on 16mm (save for the studio shooting sound which was made on magnetic tape), it features the fine writing skills of Claude Henri Grignon. The original directorial team consisting of Ferdnand Quirion and Eugène Prévost is here replaced by another one, and it will keep so for the remaining nine seasons of the TV series --with a regrettable downfall in film and narration style. At the heart of the great script by Claude Henri Grignon, lies the opposition between the parochial, collectively-oriented values of a needy and obedient Roman Catholic nation (represented by the townsfolks of Sainte-Adèle), and the ideology of Puritanism (represented by the character named Séraphin Poudrier), which allows for a part of individualistic wealth. As such, Grignon's work is strong metaphorical stuff. Under cover of a mild historical vignette, it reveals to be a witty and multilayered comment on the tensions that divide contemporary Quebec. This is unexpendable viewing for anyone who wishes to have a clear grasp on the social components of North America's next country to soon emerge, namely Québec. This 16mm medium length is, for the time being, only available on a lousy DVD made from VIDEOTAPES of the original film stock. You can count on the blockheads at the "canadian broadcasting corporation" (SIC) to make a straight-to-digital 720px transfer of this fine show sometime in the 31st century.
