What is the Present Perfect? We use the present perfect to talk about: • life experiences • actions that happened at an unknown time • actions that started in the past and continue now • recent actions with a result now Form (Structure) Subject + have / has + past participle (V3) Examples: • I have finished my work. • She has visited London. • They have lived here for years. Past Participle (V3) • work → worked • go → gone • eat → eaten • see → seen Positive Sentences • I have studied English. • He has changed his job. • We have moved house. Negative Sentences Subject + have / has + not + V3 • I haven’t finished yet. • She hasn’t called me. • They haven’t been there. Questions Have / Has + subject + V3? • Have you ever been to the UK? • Has she finished her homework? • What have you done today? ⭐ Ever / Never • ever → at any time in your life (question) • never → no time in your life Examples: • Have you ever travelled abroad? • I have never flown before. ⭐ Already / Yet / Just • already → earlier than expected • yet → until now (questions & negatives) • just → very recently Examples: • I have already eaten. • Have you finished yet? • She has just arrived. ⭐ For / Since (Very Important) • for → period of time • since → starting point Examples: • I have lived here for five years. • She has worked here since 2020. ⭐ Present Perfect vs Simple Past (Key Point) Simple Past • finished time • specific time I went to London in 2019. Present Perfect • no specific time • experience / result now I have been to London. Unfinished Time Expressions • today • this week • this year • recently Examples: • I have had three meetings today. • She has worked a lot this week. Present Perfect in Real Life • I have lost my keys. • We have changed our address. • He has applied for a job. Common Mistakes ❌ I have seen him yesterday. ✅ I saw him yesterday. ❌ She has went there. ✅ She has gone there. ❌ I live here since 2020. ✅ I have lived here since 2020.
