Here's to documenting some of our recommendations from our Hakata stint earlier in 2026! Mid-January felt like a quiet, underrated time to visit Fukuoka, where we based ourselves in Hakata (before / after heading towards other cities!). The crisp winter air (and strong winds!), clear skies, and 0-10 degree Celsius days made walking around the city feel refreshing rather than rushed. It was cold enough to crave warm meals, but still comfortable for long strolls and café stops. Food was really the heart of my time in Hakata! From mentaiko bread at the famous Full Full bakery, to rich and warming motsunabe, and a hearty bowl of Hakata ramen at Shin Shin Ramen - all of these were so simple, yet satisfying, and worth the hype. We also heavily indulged in wagyu yakiniku and rice bowls that were melting in your mouth with every bite. The coffee scene was also a massive highlight. Found some places which serve not-too-milky lattes! Slowing down over good lattes, and even stumbling upon Australian-style pancakes at Manly made the morning / brunch feel especially cozy. Hakata might not shout for attention as much as other Kyushu cities, but its warmth, comfort food, and laid-back pace, while still being in a city, really grew on me.
