Dr. Praachi Rathore was in Grade 5 when she realized she was different from the boys around her. From that moment on, she faced constant bullying and harassment at every stage of her life. But none of that stopped her from chasing her dream of becoming a doctor. She earned her medical degree, only to find that despite her qualifications, doors to employment remained shut. Not because of her abilities, but because of her identity. With no other option, she was forced to survive by seeking help on the streets. Things shifted in 2017 when she secured a junior resident doctor role at Maheshwara Medical College. After a year, she stepped away to focus on her transition surgery. Then in 2019, COVID hit. The country needed doctors, and yet, she was still denied the chance to serve. Once again, it wasn’t her qualifications that were in question, it was her identity. It was a time that nearly broke her. But she didn’t give up. Eventually, her medical skills found their place. She began treating patients during the emergency and joined MITR Clinic - India’s first transgender clinic (under Project ACCELERATE, funded by USAID) - as a medical officer. By 2021, she became the face of MITR Clinic. She hosted the International LGBTQIA+ Symposium, became an ambassador for Manipal University’s LGBTQIA+ health stream, and mentored others. She and her allies launched a year-long sensitization program for nine transgender MBBS students. Her advocacy caught the attention of Osmania General Hospital, which was launching a transgender-inclusive clinic. After attending their conference, Praachi was offered the role of Chief Medical Officer, a major turning point. But even before that, she was fighting another uphill battle. When she applied for post-grad under the transgender category, she was wrongly allotted a seat under the male category. After a 3 year legal and administrative struggle, she secured her rightful seat and made history as the first transgender person in India to pursue MS Orthopaedics at a government medical college. Dr. Praachi Rathore didn’t come this far just to come far. She’s not here just to be “the first.” She’s here to make sure no one else has to be the last. Dr. Praacchi Rathore (MBBS, DEM) didn’t just become a doctor. She became a symbol of what it means to claim your truth in the face of resistance. After being excluded by institutions that failed to understand her identity, she went on to make history as one of the first transgender women to serve in Telangana’s government healthcare system. Today, she not only treats patients at Osmania General Hospital but also speaks across the country on LGBTQIA+ rights and equity in healthcare. Her mission is clear: to create a world where compassion in healthcare knows no boundaries of identity.
