SATURDAY 13 JULY 1996 • TUINPAVILJOEN • Congress Centre, The Hague, The Netherlands On this day, April 2, 2025, Larry Coryell was born 82 years ago. To remember him we publish this rare performance from 1996. Larry Coryell (Galveston, April 2, 1943 – New York, February 19, 2017) was an American fusion guitarist. Coryell was one of the greatest masters of jazz guitar. He recorded more than 70 albums in the past 35 years as band leader and composer. He tried talking about the instrument before he switched on the guitar. His main influences were Chet Atkins, Chuck Berry and Wes Montgomery. They played a mixture of psychedelic rock and jazz. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Coryell became one of the most sought-after guitarists in rock, jazz and other music genres. During this time, he participated in various rock sessions with, among others, Jack Bruce, Jimmy Webb, The 5th Dimension, Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea and John McLaughlin. The albums he produced in that time were a mixture of rock, jazz, Eastern scales and a free form of improvisation of classic riffs. In 1974, Larry Coryell formed The Eleventh House, the popular fusion band of the time. At the end of the 70s, he teamed up with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia to tour the rest of Europe for his fast solos on the acoustic guitar. On February 19, 2017, he died unexpectedly in his sleep. Andrew James Summers (Poulton-le-Fylde (Lancashire, England), 31 December 1942) is a British musician and composer. Hij is known as guitarist of the English band The Police. The instrument he is most familiar with is the six-string electric guitar. His style of playing is determined by years of jazz and classical music studies, as well as by his work in the new age and rock genres. Summers' guitar playing has given the role of the guitarist in a rock group a whole new dimension. He consciously puts out as many possible musical styles and influences, but at the same time tries to reckon with the conventional view that a rhythm section alone must be concerned about the background for the solo guitar. Summers experimented early on with the Roland guitar synthesizer and was one of the first important guitarists to use the MIDI effect on the podium. Trilok Gurtu (Bombay, 30 October 1951) is an Indian percussionist, singer and composer, whose music transcends the boundaries of Indian music, jazz fusion, world music and other genres. He released his own record, but also collaborated with many other musicians, including Terje Rypdal, Jan Garbarek, Michel Bisceglia, Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin and Bill Laswell. Since 1996, Gurtu focuses more on niet-western music. Welcome to the official North Sea Jazz Archive!
