Management 101: Building a relationship with your team If you are a new manager, you will be faced with many new challenges. Most likely there will be a lot to learn and new demands on your time. One of the keys to success is building a strong relationship with your new team, especially if any of your new reports used to be a peer. Your success hinges on the success of your team so it’s critical to develop that relationship as quickly as possible. Today I have 5 tips to help you get there. 1) Build a culture of listening You can find a lot of articles about “active listening” which starts with giving the person in front of you your undivided attention, check your understanding of their questions and comments, reflect back emotions such as, “you sound like you’re really frustrated”. If you are running a meeting, make sure everyone has an opportunity to be heard, allow people time to think through their ideas and thoughts on the topic at hand. 2) Use Praise This might seem obvious but can easily be overlooked especially as you get busier in your new role. Offering comments such as “great work.” However, the key here is to be authentic. Provide specifics to your praise and explain the benefit of that work. such as “that spreadsheet you completed was very accurate. This allowed us to complete our month end reports even faster than usual. Great Work.” One thing I’ve found to go a long way is to let my boss know what great work one of my employees did and in an e-mail, make sure that person is copied. It shows support and true appreciation. 3) Be A Leader This is an in depth topic and really requires a deeper dive so i’ll be creating more videos. But to start, realize people want a leader, not a buddy who engages in office gossip. You should be offering objectivity and clarity and when possible, try to offer a different perspective at a higher level. A lot of the day-to-day “noise” is created by a lack of understanding. 4) Ask Questions One of the worst things you can do, especially early in your new role, is to implement policies and procedures without making sure you’ve done your due dilligence to learn the nuances of the current status. Asking questions will foster trust and strengthen the relationship. Asking questions also allows others to be more solutions focused, use their creativity and take calculated risks. 5) Set High Expectations Not only are high expectations important to producing results but making your expectations clear to your team. This provides clarity and will set the individuals up for success. Make sure you are demonstrating the same behaviors and practice what you preach. If you expect everyone in their seats on time every day, don’t show up late with any regularity. Steve Jobs once said, “Leadership is about inspiring people to do things they never thought they could.” Creating a “yes you can” culture can lift performance and demonstrates your belief in the team. Those are what I’d consider the first 5 most important steps for managers, especially those new to their role. Build rapport, recognize a job will done when it’s warranted, and provide clarity for your expectations and direction of the company. All of these tips will help you build a solid foundation for your success.
