Adventureland [TRS-80 Model I] Scott Adams Grand Adventure #1 Let's Play - Full Solution Adventureland was an Interactive Fiction Text Adventure (IFTA) originally distributed on a 16k cassette for the TRS-80 Model I microcomputer series in 1978. Later it was ported to the TRS-80 Model III Microcomputer series. The exact version I am using has been ported from cassette to a floppy disk. I prefer this for increased data access speeds. It is often considered to be the first IFTA for the microcomputer market, and it credited with being the foundation for the entire IFTA market boom. It was played in a pure text environment, with the player inputting text command actions in a two word string using VERB-NOUN, with a primitive parser deciding what happened, and then describing the results to the player in text on screen. In many ways it was like playing a Pen & Paper RPG, such as AD&D, or even a Choose Your Own Adventure Novel. One of the greatest keys to solving a text adventure was a well drawn map. Often, in fact almost always, a good map with proper notations is all that stood between success and failure. Due to my use of a map, and decisions of how to present the game, this may not be a complete example of the game world that was available to the player, as many dead ends may exist, and my goal was to illustrate playing through the game efficiently. Adventureland is often accused of being a copy of the first IFTA on the DEC PDP-10, ADVENT, also known as Colossal Cave Adventure. In my experience of playing both all the way through, I have come to the conclusion that this is unearned and unfair criticism. I can see places where certain puzzles were definitely influnced by ADVENT, but the majority of Adventureland is an original creation. In Adventureland, the player is set loose in a semi-fantasy themed area. The interface quickly explains the base objective of the game, how to interact with the player's avatar, and then sets you loose to explore. In this game, the objective is to bring 13 separate treasures, which are all obviously marked as treasures so there is no confusion upon finding them, to a single location, and then type the command SCORE. When all 13 treasures are gathered in the proper location, and the SCORE command is entered, the game congratulates you for winning, and ends. In this play through, I walk you through all the important parts of the game in order to get all 13 treasures. I show you the solutions of the important challenges, and explain the puzzles you, as a player, will face. I even take the time to illustrate how the death mechanic can be exploited in order to engage a form of fast-travel and save lamp time. In order to create this I used emulation technology. Though, in the past I had owned the machines this game were released on, they have long since been lost or broken. Please forgive how rough this is. This is a still learning process.
