Whisk together milk and egg yolks in a separate bowl until it is fully blended and then add to saucepan Turn on stove to medium heat and whisk until it comes to a steady boil. Let boil 1 minute, still whisking; then remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Strain pastry cream through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl.
