The binomial distribution is a discrete probability distribution that describes the number of successes in a fixed number of independent trials, where each trial has only two possible outcomes, such as success or failure. For a situation to be modelled by a binomial distribution, the number of trials must be fixed, the probability of success must remain constant for each trial, and the trials must be independent of one another. The distribution shows how likely it is to obtain different numbers of successes across all the trials. Its average number of successes depends on the number of trials and the probability of success, and its shape depends on the probability value: it is symmetrical when the probability of success is 0.5 and becomes skewed when the probability moves away from 0.5.
